Something New (2006)

“Something New” is a 2006 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Sanaa Hamri. The screenplay by Kriss Turner focuses on interracial relationships and traditional African American family values and social customs. The film follows the story of career-minded Kenya McQueen, who is set up on a blind date with architect Brian Kelly but initially backs out upon realizing that he is white. However, she eventually hires Kelly to design her new garden, leading to a romantic relationship that forces her to choose between the type of man she always dreamed she wanted and giving in to life’s little surprises.

The film received mixed reviews, with Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times rating it 3 out of four stars and commenting, “I found myself unexpectedly moved.” He continued, “By the end, Something New delivers all the usual pleasures of a love story, and something more. The movie tackles serious questions about race and interracial relationships with genuine appeal and an alluring romance that develops as naturally as the plot”. The film is noted for its groundbreaking approach in discussing topics such as “The Black Tax,” the true difference between racism and reverse racism, and Black hair culture, among others, making it a romantic comedy with depth, conviction, and heart.

The film stars Sanaa Lathan as Kenya McQueen and Simon Baker as Brian Kelly. It was released on DVD in Region 1 with bonus features including an introduction by Blair Underwood, “The Making of Something New,” and “The Dos and Don’ts of Dating”.

“Something New” is recognized for its portrayal of real people, real responses, real dialogue, and real issues, and it is one of the few romantic movies that center around an interracial relationship and keep it real.
