The Heirloom (2024) is a Canadian comedy-drama film directed by Ben Petrie and starring Petrie alongside Grace Glowicki. The story follows Eric and Allie, a couple whose relationship is tested during the COVID-19 lockdown when they decide to adopt a traumatized rescue dog named Milly. What initially seems like a simple attempt to bring joy into their lives slowly turns into a chaotic emotional journey as Eric, a struggling filmmaker, becomes obsessed with turning their experience into a movie.

As Eric becomes increasingly inspired by the situation, his creative obsession begins to blur the line between real life and the story he is imagining. The film cleverly mixes romance, comedy, and psychological drama while exploring the pressures that lockdown and close living conditions place on relationships. Eric’s attempts to control the situation with the dog and his film idea create tension with Allie, revealing deeper insecurities and anxieties within their relationship.

Premiering at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, The Heirloom stands out for its intimate storytelling and semi-autobiographical elements inspired by the real-life relationship between its lead actors. The film combines humor with emotional vulnerability, portraying how creativity, stress, and love collide during an uncertain time. Through its unique narrative style, the movie offers a thoughtful reflection on modern relationships, artistic ambition, and the unpredictable ways life’s small decisions can reshape the future.
